We carry a variety
of brochures and newsletters. One mental health newspaper we feature
is New York City
Voices which was founded by the late Kenneth Steele, and
besides having stories about the mental health world of New York
City, City Voices carries a strong message of mental health
consumer empowerment.
The library has a
section of books devoted to leisure reading for inpatients. The
library also has a computer room with a number of brand new, fast
computers with high-speed Internet access and flat screen LCD
monitors. The library has educational videos, with TV/VCR/DVD’s
for viewing. We have an assortment of Spanish language materials.
The library has classes in computer education. The library sponsors
community events, and provides a good place for finding information
on understanding mental illness.
New
York State Psychiatric Institute
realizes the
importance of informing patients and their families about the
nature and treatment of psychiatric disorders. Knowledge about
the patient’s illness and treatment facilitates the process of
recovery for the patient and is believed to reduce stress for
the family.
Created in order
to assist patients and families seeking information about the
patient’s diagnosis and the kinds of treatment being given, the
patient and family library provides books, videos, and brochures
about mental health in English and Spanish for patients, family
members, and their friends. Patients can borrow novels and other
non-fiction works in English and Spanish as well as clinical texts
during their hospital stay. Informative brochures are also available
in both languages. Videotapes illustrating the psychiatric experiences
of others can be viewed in the library, bringing to life the diagnosis
and treatment of many mental disorders. Computers with internet
access connect the user to websites dedicated to psychiatry.
