washinton at nightSAVE THE DATE for 'GRAY MATTERS' Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, May 11, 2010.

Three years ago, Columbia University’s Psychiatry Department inaugurated a program called Gray Matters and began hosting an annual luncheon to accomplish its mission: to support young researchers in an area of brain research.  This year, Gray Matters will be granting an award specifically for Lyme research.  We are asking you to come join us and help make this occasion a success. At Columbia, there are many disorders that compete for funds and departmental attention. The selection of Lyme Disease as one of the three highlighted diseases this year is remarkable and a testimony to Columbia's recognition of the urgency of the Lyme epidemic and problem.   As you know, Lyme disease is a multi-systemic illness that frequently affects the nervous system.  By rapidly disseminating to the brain, the spirochete can then wreak havoc....causing meningitis or encephalitis shortly after tick bite or causing problems with memory, mood, and brain fog months or years later. The Columbia University Department of Psychiatry is one of the foremost neuroscience research institutes in the world (with two current Nobel Prize winners).   Director of the Lyme Center, Dr. Brian Fallon, conducts research that bridges neurology and psychiatry; as a neuropsychiatrist, he is a member of the Department of Psychiatry.  We are thrilled that because of this affiliation, we have been given the opportunity to jointly raise funds with Columbia to battle this brutal illness.   Please join us at the Gray Matters luncheon to meet the innovative young researchers who need our support to tackle this most challenging of diseases. More information upcoming...

The evening began with a family style Italian dinner at Carmines's and was followed by the Broadway smash hit 'Memphis', an exciting and joyful rock and roll musical. at the Shubert Theater.  Funds raised from the evening will be used to support the research activities of the Columbia Lyme Center toward the development of better diagnostic tests for Lyme patients at all stages of the illness, identification of biological markers in patients who are likely to have persistent symptoms, and evaluation of treatment protocols.
