Brain Imaging in Social Anxiety Disorder

Purpose: Use state-of-the-art brain imaging techniques to
learn more about the brain chemistry of the
neurotransmitter
dopamine, believed to be involved in social anxiety. We hope the
results of this study
will, in the future, help improve diagnosis
and treatment of social anxiety problems.
You may be eligible if you: Are between the ages of 18-55
Have current social anxiety problems
Are not currently taking psychiatric medication
What is Involved: Psychiatric and medical evaluation, at no cost
to participant
If eligible, brain scans (including PET and SPECT) usually
conducted
over a 2-3 week period.
Benefits to Participant: Free, thorough clinical evaluation by
psychiatrist.
After completing the study, participants will receive payment and 3
months of free treatment.
Escitalopram Treatment of Major Depression with Comorbid Social
Anxiety Disorder

Purpose: To test the effectiveness escitalopram (Lexapro), a
recently marketed antidepressant, in the
treatment of persons with
both depression and social anxiety disorder.
You may be eligible if you: Are between the ages of 18-65
Have current social anxiety problems and depression
Are not currently taking psychiatric medication
What is Involved: Psychiatric and medical evaluation, at no
cost to participant
If eligible, 12 weeks of treatment with escitalopram (Lexapro)
No placebo (sugar pill) is used in this study
Benefits to Participant: Free, thorough clinical evaluation
by psychiatrist.
Escitalopram treatment may improve symptoms of depression and social
anxiety disorder.
After completing the study, participants will receive 3 months of
free treatment.
