The Photography and Illustration Department assists researchers in preparing data for presentation in lectures, publications and poster sessions. The department attempts to keep pace with technological changes in the imaging world and currently offers a variety of services from traditional silver-print photography, 35mm slide production, line drawings and graphs to support for electronic slide presentation and imaging, slide scanning, seamless banner titles, large format poster printing and digital photography. Special photo sessions can be arranged in the labs or in the photography studio as needed, and the department photographs many departmental and Institute-wide events over the year. We supply photographs for several publications, among them the Annual Report, the PI Local and the PI Newsletter.

While continuing to support a traditional photography studio, The Photo and Illustration Department is working to become fully digital. In 2001 we acquired a professional quality digital camera and slide scanner for digitizing slides and negatives. Plans for the future include upgrading the large-format printer, and adding an archival-quality photograph printer. In 2001 we also continued to work on digitizing and cataloguing the Institute’s formidable archive of prints and negatives dating back to the turn of the (last) century to create a searchable database of electronic images.
