FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Columbia University and Tel Aviv University Join Forces to Fight Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
The Hopeful Dawn Foundation sponsors joint effort to expand research, treatment, prevention, and education

NEW YORK, NY — June 27, 2014 — Dr. Yuval Neria, a decorated war veteran and Professor of Medical Psychology (in Psychiatry and Epidemiology) from Columbia University Medical Center in New York City and Dr. Yair Bar Haim, Professor of Psychology and Neuroscience from Tel Aviv University in Israel will collaborate through the Hopeful Dawn Foundation to create a state-of-the-art program and center to expand the research, treatment, prevention and education for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Thanks to the philanthropic support of the Hopeful Dawn Foundation, the PTSD and Trauma Research and Treatment Program of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, under Dr. Neria’s leadership, will partner with the PTSD Center at the School of Psychological Sciences at Tel Aviv University, guided by Dr. Bar Haim, to advance trauma related research, clinical care and training.

“According to the Veterans Affairs Department, in the United States alone there are 22 Veteran suicides per day, that is 1 every 80 minutes,” stated Dr. Diana Kaplan, founder of The Hopeful Dawn Foundation. “The need for a solution is eminent, but we have yet to see a successful attempt to solve this matter.”

Dr. Neria said, "Translational research of trauma-related disorders, including PTSD, is highly needed in order to advance innovative interventions for civilians and veterans who survive wars, disasters, and personal traumas. We will focus on neuroscience- informed research and innovative clinical care to make a difference in this field. “
on research activities through Given the paucity of research on primary prevention of PTSD and the limited efficacy of current treatments, the collaboration will seek to develop innovative clinical interventions and prevention programs.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Lieberman, Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center noted that, “The effects of emotional trauma on mental function, particularly in the context of military combat, has been understudied for too long and is a critical public health priority. We are grateful for this generous support to Columbia and Tel Aviv Universities to expand our research and services in PTSD.”

Dr. Kaplan stated that, “It is the Hopeful Dawn Foundation’s mission to find a solution to this growing epidemic by creating a solution to aid the over 5.2 million veterans and civilians who have suffered trauma in the United States alone. Working with leading doctors in these areas while establishing programs and centers would help the suffering get the treatment they need without standing in line”.

The collaboration created by the Hopeful Dawn Foundation will serve as a unique international forum for research to discover new knowledge related to the treatment of PTSD, providing a base for the education of the medical and healthcare community as well as representatives of the military and political communities.

In addition to the research and educational components, the center and the programs will include a multidisciplinary clinical team of psychologists, social workers, and psychiatrists. Experts will use evidence-based and novel treatment techniques with a focus on early identification and intervention of PTSD. Individuals identified as suffering from the complex symptomatology of PTSD will be helped with intensive and multi-faceted treatment modalities with the goal of preventing further deterioration and
eventual recovery.

As June 27th is National PTSD Day, it is imperative to underscore the importance of continuing treatment efforts and research. The Hopeful Dawn Foundation, Columbia University Medical Center, and Tel Aviv University hope to bring relief to those struggling to combat PTSD. This collaboration is simply the beginning of the Hopeful Dawn Foundation’s efforts in its path to give hope to many.
