Alcohol and Substance AbuseSubstance abuse disorders are characterized by a pattern of excessive use of a drug, alcohol, or other chemical, leading to effects that are detrimental to the individual's physical and mental health, or the welfare of others. Unless addressed early and aggressively with treatment, drug and alcohol abuse often result in negative social consequences, such as failure to meet work, family, or school obligations, as well as interpersonal conflicts and legal problems.
