“Doctors generally care about medical outcomes, much more than style and aesthetics,” Dr. Robert Klitzman, an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center, said in an interview. “How you look is something patients confront and try to control. But they often have to do so on their own.” The 75 doctors Dr. Klitzman talked to for his 2008 book, “When Doctors Become Patients,” were acutely aware of the importance of appearance when they themselves became seriously ill.
