Appelbaum's advice for health officials working on the front lines with detainees is to remember their professional oath and refuse to be complicit and compromise their professional standing.

"As soon as doctors become involved in interrogation, they become compromised," he said, adding that there isn't a gray area for medical professionals when it comes to torture.
