NEW YORK STATE PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE
SOCIAL WORK DEPARTMENT

5 South

5-South is a 16 bed research unit staffed by a multi-disciplinary treatment team consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, recreational therapists, mental health therapy aides, social work interns and medical students.  This unit provides treatment for patients who volunteer to become research subjects in studies that explore new treatments for psychiatric illnesses such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depression and substance abuse disorders.

Upon admission, all patients receive a thorough diagnostic evaluation of their psychiatric and medical condition, and if they are found to be appropriate, are entered into a research program.  The study design for the research programs are multi-faceted, examining diagnostic, genetic, neurological, biochemical, hormonal and psycho-social aspects of the illness.

Social workers are available to patients and their families for psycho-education and support and to provide discharge-planning services. One of the main social work goals is to help families better understand and cope with their family member’s illness. Follow up care and eligibility for benefits are assessed and handled as part of the psychosocial needs assessment conducted by the social worker.
