NEW YORK STATE PSYCHIATRIC INSTITUTE
SOCIAL WORK DEPARTMENT

Student Program

The Social Work Intern Training Program at New York State Psychiatric Institute provides second year Social Work students a foundation in the field of Psychiatry. Although the majority of interns specialize in clinical social work, other specialties include administration , research and program planning areas of practice. Students are trained in direct practice in any of these modalities in tandem with a weekly seminar program. Other educational opportunities within the Institute include Grand Rounds, Case Conferences, and staff meetings. There is the opportunity for placement during the full academic year (September through May) as well as during the Summer (a ten week summer internship).

All students have the opportunity to work with patients and their families. Groups are available in most placements. Supervision is provided on a weekly basis and a variety of clinical conferences are offered throughout the Institute. A weekly student seminar is led by different social workers and Institute staff covering various disorders, modalities and concepts of treatment.
