Riding My Way Back is a short documentary that chronicles one soldier’s journey back from the brink of suicide. At his most desperate and isolated, Staff Sergeant Aaron Heliker is introduced to the unlikeliest of saviors: a horse named Fred.
Therapeutic interventions involving horses are increasingly being used to treat, or as adjunctive treatments for, numerous psychiatric and behavioral disorders. Many “Equine Therapy” (ET) or “Equine-Assisted Psychotherapy” (EAP) programs target veterans who have PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and suicidal thoughts/behaviors. Drs. Shaffer, Neria and Fisher are leading the Equine Therapy-PTSD Project at Columbia University’s Department of Psychiatry. The project leaders will bring their expertise in trauma-related and suicide research and treatment, including underscoring the need for methodologically sound research that evaluates ET and EAP, to the panel discussion following the screening.
They will be joined by SSgt. Heliker, Mindy Fisher, Certified PATH Therapeutic Riding Instructor, and Peter Rosenbaum, the film’s co-director.
