Description
This one year full-time clinical fellowship program was established in 1985 with the goal of facilitating the recruitment and retention of high caliber geriatric psychiatrists to non-cosmopolitan areas of NY State. The program consists of two ACGME-accredited tracks with an administrative base at Columbia . The primary training site for each track is located at Greater Binghamton Health Center in upstate New York. The Binghamton Campus Track includes rotations in a wide range of clinical sites in the Binghamton area with monthly rotations at New York Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center. The Columbia Campus Track includes comparable rotation sites that are based primarily at the Columbia University Medical Center in the Washington Heights area of New York City. Columbia Campus Track fellows also complete a rotation at the Greater Binghamton Health Center. Training is focused on the practice of geriatric psychiatry as related to the transition of the public mental health system from a concentration on inpatients in state hospitals to integrated hospital and community mental health sites of service. The fellowship is accredited by ACGME; successful completion leads to eligibility for Added Qualifications in Geriatric Psychiatry.
The outstanding feature of the program is its innovative and unique combination of educational and clinical experiences in a variety of federally-designated medically underserved areas. The program involves outreach and collaboration originating from its academic base at the Stroud Center for Study of Quality of Life, an inter- and intra-university center within the Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, to medically underserved areas served by Greater Binghamton Health Center and Columbia University Medical Center/NY Presbyterian Hospital. This outreach is facilitated by an internationally renowned faculty of academic psychiatrists, psychologists and research scientists. Core faculty members from Columbia provide weekly full-day didactic instruction at Greater Binghamton Health Center.

Eligibility
- Completion of accredited psychiatric residency training program
- New York State medical licensure
- To be considered for Fellowship beginning July 1, all application materials must be submitted by December 31
- Applicants for the Fellowship should submit a CV and personal statement, and arrange to have three letters of reference sent to Dr. Mark Nathanson and Dr. John Toner.
