We will keep this page update with the latest information regarding the reactivation of scanning protocols at the NYSPI MRI unit.
COVID Testing Policy for MRI Participants
A NYSPI institutional COVID testing policy is effective immediately for research MRI participants. This applies to every participant in any protocol making use of the NYSPI MRI unit.
All MRI participants are required to undergo rapid antigen COVID testing upon arrival at NYSPI. Each protocol will have its own research staff perform test administration. Test kits will be supplied by the MRI unit at no cost to the research group. In the instance of an infant scan, the primary Guardian will be tested in lieu of the infant. Test results are to be reported using the Covid-19 Rapid Test Screener for MRI Participants survey.
Groups may pick up a test from the MRI unit at any time the day of their scan. Tests must be performed BEFORE groups arrive for their scan, upon the participant's arrival at NYSPI. Tests may not be performed in the MRI unit.
For participants testing negative, please email the completed form along with the standard pre-scan paperwork and proceed to the scheduled scan.
For participants testing positive:
They must fill out a testing form for Infection Control, which is available from the MRI unit if needed.
Immediately assure that the subject has mask on, is sent home with instructions to reach their PCP, quarantines at home, and gets a PCR test if at all possible.
Immediately send the completed testing form to NYSPI Infection Control at InfectionControl@nyspi.columbia.edu with subject “MRI Participant Positive COVID Test”
As the MRI Unit reactivates, we are doing so with the goal of minimizing the risk to both staff and participants. In order to allow ample time for disinfection and newly-instituted safety protocols and procedures, we must reduce the operating capacity of the scanner and restrict access to the MRI unit. All protocols have been carefully considered and reviewed by Central Administration.
As of November 1st, 2021, the scanner will be operating at 100% capacity, with a 15 minute gap between scheduled scans that will likely remain in place indefinitely. Operating hours are 8am-8pm M-F and 9am-5pm on weekends (depending on need).
Throughout ramp-up and reactivation, we’ve revisited and evolved several of our policies and procedures as we’ve acclimated to the current environment, and we will continue to do so. This guide will be updated and revised accordingly.
