*CME EVENT* 23rd Annual Schizophrenia Conference:Understanding Causes and Promoting Recovery for Professionals, Families and ConsumersProgram Description & Objectives This conference is designed for mental health professionals involved in the treatment and management of schizophrenia, and for families and consumers interested in furthering their knowledge of this illness. We at Columbia University Medical Center are determined to continue our commitment to understand the causes of mental illness, and to find a cure for them. This course is designed to present information on the understanding and treatment of schizophrenia. The focus of this year's course will be "Understanding Causes and Promoting Recovery." Course participants will acquire knowledge about: the effectiveness and side effects of current antipsychotic medications; recent insights into the genetics and biology of schizophrenia; the role of drugs in causing schizophrenia; strategies for cognitive remediation of learning and memory problems in schizophrenia; the process of recovery from schizophrenia; and family therapy models in treatment. Participants will be able to attend all plenary presentations and to choose among several small group workshops led by the faculty members. Each workshop will focus on a specific topic in greater depth and allow for questions and discussion. At the conclusion of the program, family members and consumers will be better able to seek out appropriate treatments and medications, and to enhance the quality of their lives. Mental health professionals will be better able to apply established treatments and institute new ones, and work with other professionals to treat schizophrenia more effectively.
