Application Procedure

Candidates for the Psychiatry Residency Training Program at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia Campus / New York State Psychiatric Institute (ACGME ID # 4003521138) must hold an M.D. degree, or must currently be a senior medical student in an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school. Columbia University is an AA/EEO employer and applications from minorities and women are particularly encouraged. All applications, including those from international medical graduates, are accepted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) matching system.  This year, we are recruiting for 12 PGY-1 positions starting on July 1st.

For International Medical Graduates requirements also include the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification and USMLE step 1 scores. Also required is at least one letter of recommendation from faculty affiliated with Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, or an evaluation from a direct clinical experience in the United States or Canada. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, non-citizen nationals of the United States, or must be lawfully admitted for permanent residence by October 1st to apply. Unfortunately, candidates seeking visa sponsorship during residency are ineligible to apply to our program.

Applications consisting of the universal application form, medical school transcript, three letters of reference, and personal statement are made to Columbia through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) and should be completed by October 1. After the completed application is processed by our Selection Committee, applicants will be notified by e-mail of interview arrangements. Dates for interviews are offered at that time. Interviews are held on Thursdays from early-November to mid-January.
